Web  NewUnionism
The New Unionism Online Library contains reports, articles and other papers related to the development of trade unionism. While we may not necessarily agree with the views expressed in some of these papers, each adds something useful to the collection. We welcome contributions - see the bottom of this page for advice on how you can help us to build this library as a free and open resource for the labour movement.

Turning practice into theory!
FAT-UENew Unionism member Richard Leitch analyses the cross-border alliance of the US United Electrical workers (UE) and Mexico's Authentic Labour Front (FAT) - in relation to current debates on union renewal. What can we learn from their social movement approach?

relational organizing
Check out the world's first "Hololog". In it we discuss relational organizing - an approach which sits equally well with trade unionists, community activists, and faith-based networkers. What these enthusiasts describe seems to be a variant on the organizing model, but with a much heavier emphasis on relationships within the group, rather than just interactions between the group and the employer. As one organizer who has used the approach with spectacular results said: "This is about us, not them". If you're a union organizer make time to read this; it may change everything. You'll fid it in the Organizing folder above, or click herearrows

young people & unionismarrows
All those workshops and sub-committees... all those caucuses... all those motions of support... Why is it that young people are still not flocking to join unions?? This second hololog looks at the issue of unionisation through the eyes of young people working successfully in the field (as well as a few left-field gonks). herearrows

reframing the debatearrows
This holololog looks at how conservatives have come to dominate public discourse over the last 30 years. Through some shared comment and a couple of games we discuss how "reframing the debate" would help to reclaim the centre stage, and rebuild unity and popular support. herearrows

work in progress & newswire
The network's bi-monthly magazine Work in Progress is available for download in MS-Word format here. We also have a Newswire which is sent out weekly (both are HTML format emails). You can subscribe to these publications for free, along with several other useful e-bulletins, from our Resources page.

economic democracyarrows
There has been endless time spent on developing democratic processes in the social and political spheres. However somehow economics sneaked past while we weren't looking. In this article network founding member Dr Conor Cradden takes a look at the developments which led up to this situation. Now all we have to do is change it. You'll find the article in the Organizing folder (see "Hololog - New Unionism - 2007"), or click herearrows

organizations, movements and networksarrows
In this paper on trade union structural forms, network founding member Professor Charles Heckscher (possibly the father of New Unionism?) looks at three quite different phenomena: the labour movement, labour organizations, and labour networks. His discussion of the latter suggests a new way forward for workers. Looking at developments over the past few years (with global alliances developing in target industries and other forms of transnational collaboration taking shape), history seems to be proving Heckscher right once again. The library also contains other works by the same author (a founding member of this network) which are well worth reading. You will find these in both the Partnership and Organizing folders.

reaching the missing millionsarrows
This highly influential TUC paper from 2001 brings together a series of strands in consideration of a new strategic approach for the UK union movement. It is well worth reading for anyone who wants to understand the thinking behind New Unionism. Our discussion of the subsequent results of this project can be found here.
